1.3 Safety Guide

Nitrogen, carbon dioxide and shield gases of welding

In gas form it is colourless, odourless and an asphyxiant. Gas which has just evaporated from liquid form is visible as a light vapour cloud. Vapourised gas displaces air, especially in confined spaces, and therefore poses a danger of asphyxiation.

Effect on the skin

When in liquid form, causes cryogenic burns upon contact with the skin.

Protection

Use eye protection and loose, insulated protective gloves.

Inhalation

Cases of oxygen deficiency (oxygen concentration less than 17%) will cause temporary confusion and impaired reasoning. When the concentration of oxygen is less than 10%, the person is no longer able to move or call for help, and loss of consciousness is possible. When the concentration of oxygen is less than 6%, loss of consciousness and death within a few minutes will occur.

First aid

The patient should be taken to a location with fresh air, but do not enter a space with insufficient oxygen without using a compressed air respirator. Provide oxygen or give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if necessary. Loosen tight clothes, medical attention.

Fire hazard

The gas does not burn and instead suffocates the combustion of other materials.

Other noteworthy information

Use special respirators. N.B.! A gas mask used for poisonous gases is not suitable! YOU MUST USE SELFCONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS (SCBA) OR AIR LINE RESPIRATOR.
