Carbon monoxide (CO)

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, extremely flammable and poisonous gas that is slightly lighter than air and has low solubility. Carbon monoxide forms from the incomplete combustion of organic matter. Carbon monoxide forms an extremely combustible gas mixture with air. Corrodes iron at high pressure.
Effect on the skin
When in liquid form, causes cryogenic burns upon contact with the skin.
Inhalation
Irritates the respiratory system, eyes and skin. Carbon monoxide binds haemoglobin in the blood 200 – 300 times more effi ciently than oxygen. Symptoms of overexposure include headache, dizziness, nausea, sweating, convulsions and respiratory arrest. High concentrations can result in the rapid loss of consciousness without any warning symptoms.
First aid
Move the exposed person to a location with fresh air. If breathing has stopped, give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Provide the patient with 100% oxygen if available. Seek immediate medical attention.
