3.3 Safety Guide

Legislation

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Työturvallisuuslaki 738/2002), the employer must take care of everything necessary to protect employees from accidents and to prevent any workrelated detriment to employees’ health. The employer must provide the employee with sufficient training and guidance to avoid work-related accidents and illness.

The employee must comply with instructions for organisation and protection, use the necessary protective equipment and take care of his or her own safety as well as that of his or her colleagues. Penalties or a maximum of one year’s imprisonment will be issued for breaches in occupational safety.

Correct and safe working methods include:

  • Keeping the workplace clean and tidy.
  • Keeping tools in good condition.
  • Compliance with work and usage instructions.
  • Use of the necessary personal protective equipment.
  • Reporting hazards and removing them where possible.
  • Taking other employees into account.
  • Care and caution. You have the right to refrain from carrying out work which could cause a danger to you or others.
