1.3 Safety Guide

Hydrogen peroxide, 50% (H2O2)

merkki1merkki6

Hydrogen peroxide (50 percent) is highly oxidising. Risk of decomposition upon heating. Risk of decomposition when it comes into contact with incompatible compounds (metal oxides, metal ions such as Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, Cr, Zn, metal salts, bases, reductive materials). Causes risk of fire/explosion in compounds with flammable material. Corrosive. Respiratory irritant.

Effect on the skin

Is corrosive to the skin, may cause colourlessness of the skin and redness, blistering. Contact with the eyes causes severe inflammation of the conjunctiva and may cause serious damage to the cornea. May cause permanent eye damage.

Protection

Use protective gloves (e.g. neoprene, nitrile, natural rubber or PVC) and facial protection (at least eye protection), as well as appropriate protective clothing. DO NOT USE LEATHER OR COTTON GLOVES, LEATHER OR COTTON CLOTHING, OR LEATHER FOOTWEAR (fire hazard). Possibility of emergency shower and eye rinse.

First aid

Remove affected clothing immediately. Spatters must be rinsed away immediately with plenty of water. If irritation to the skin is persistent, seek medical attention. Rinse the eyes immediately with plenty of water for at least 20 minutes, also rinsing under the eyelids, and seek medical attention.

Inhalation/ingestion

Inhalation of aerosols may cause irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes and pulmonary oedema. When swallowed, the product can cause corrosive damage to the upper digestive tract and stomach.

Prevention

Good ventilation and local removal. Use an appropriate respirator if ventilation is insufficient (filter type NO/CO, ABEK). When dealing with high concentrations, use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and a chemical-resistant hazardous materials suit.

First aid

Inhalation: Move away from exposure. Keep warm. Provide oxygen or give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if necessary. Contact a doctor immediately.

Ingestion: Rinse the mouth with water. Drink plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting. Never give an unconscious person anything by mouth. Keep warm. Contact a doctor immediately.
